TOGETHER THROUGH THE NIGHT OF HOPE: BRMI BRINGS JOY AND PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT TO YELWATA IDP CAMP
For families displaced by the Yelwata crisis and currently residing at the International Market IDP Camp in Benue State, the year had been marked by displacement, uncertainty, loss, and difficult memories.
But as the year came to an end, Brotherly Relief Mission Initiative (BRMI) created a moment of hope, connection, and renewed joy through a psychosocial support activity tagged “Together Through the Night of Hope.”
The programme brought together children, young people, women, and families for an evening of entertainment, cultural expression, talent, and community bonding.
Activities included dancing competitions, traditional food and cultural displays featuring Ukauka, barbing and make-up competitions, and a beauty pageant. These activities provided participants with an opportunity to express themselves, celebrate their cultural heritage, showcase their talents, and experience a renewed sense of dignity and belonging.
The celebration was further enriched by performances from renowned Benue entertainers, including Baba Yev, Rapizo, Edna Jones, Omo Benue, and Terry Mbajor, whose music and performances transformed the atmosphere of the camp.
The laughter grew. The music filled the air. Families danced and celebrated together.
For a few precious hours, the burden of displacement gave way to joy.
As midnight approached, anticipation filled the camp. When the New Year finally arrived, the families welcomed it together—dancing, laughing, and holding on to hope.
The evening was complemented by sumptuous meals shared throughout the programme, making the celebration a memorable experience for the displaced families.
Yet, beyond the competitions, music, food, and celebration, “Together Through the Night of Hope” carried a deeper message.
It reminded displaced families that they had not been forgotten.
It affirmed their dignity.
It celebrated their culture.
And it reinforced the importance of psychosocial support in helping communities navigate the emotional and social consequences of displacement.
For BRMI, the programme was more than an event. It was an expression of compassion and solidarity—a simple but powerful reminder that even in the midst of adversity, people deserve moments of joy, connection, dignity, and hope.
Together Through the Night of Hope.
